Taktshang is perhaps the most famous monastery in Bhutan. Qualified to be one of the wonders of the world, Paro Taktshang (Tiger’s Lair) is not only one of Bhutan’s most sacred sites, but an architectural wonder. The monastery was named Taktshang after Guru Rinpoche, the great Indian Saint and Master flew there from Kurtoe Singay Dzong (Eastern Bhutan) riding a tigress and subdued evil forces that were obstructing the spread of Buddhism. Gyalse Tenzin Rabgay, the then secular head of Bhutan began the construction of the monastery in 1692 and completed it in 1694 on this very site.
